ENHANCE YOUR DISHES WITH THE BOLD FLAVORS OF SOFRITO
Sofrito is used in recipes to add delicious flavor. This amazing recipe idea is made by blending herbs and vegetables to make an all in one flavor enhancer.
It combines many of the vegetables that are readily used in recipes with some additional, not so common ones and creates a blend that to me is, genius.
Whoever thought of this deserves a big high five.
Once the sofrito is made it can be frozen in ice cubes and stored in freezer storage bags for later use. It lasts a very long time.
One ice cube equals to about 1 tablespoon in recipes. It can be added frozen or melted prior to use.
It can also be stored in a glass jar in the refrigerator but it doesn’t last long because it does not contain any preservatives.
Sofrito
Ingredients
1 bunch culantro
1 bunch cilantro
2 onions
2 heads of garlic
½ cup aji dulce or sweet peppers*
1 green pepper
water
*Make sure they are not scotch bonnet or habanero peppers. They look similar but are very spicy.
Directions
- Rinse vegetables well to remove dirt.
- Cut off stem ends from cilantro and culantro.
- Peel the garlic and onions.
- Remove seeds from green peppers and aji dulce peppers.
- Roughly chop all of the ingredients.
- Mix together in a bowl.
- Next, add vegetables in batches to a blender adding about 2 cups of water until smooth. If you prefer your sofrito with a more intense flavor add less water.
- Tip:
- Freeze sofrito in ice cube trays and place in freezer storage bags to preserve. It can be added frozen or melted in the microwave prior to adding to recipes.
- 1 cube of sofrito is about 1 tablespoon depending on your ice cube tray.
